- The first diplomatic recognition of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam,
a nationalist movement led by Ho Chi Minh and controlling much of the
northern areas of Vietnam, was given by the Communist government of
the People's Republic of China, which then began military aid to Ho.
- A bipartisan U.S. Senate Investigating Committee voted to approve
a report rebuking President Truman's military aide, Major General Harry
H. Vaughn, for having accepted a corporate gift of seven home freezers
for himself and other high-ranking officers.
