Overview

Korean_War

The development of the of Sikorsky HO5S–1's was on target and the plan was for the delivery of three (3) units every a month beginning in March 1951.

Korean_War

The first contract provided for 12 Sikorsky HO5S–1's; four for each of the two VMO squadrons (VMO-6 and VMO-1 on the east coast) and four as replacements for the HO3S–1's in HMX–1.

General of the Army Dwight David Eisenhower

From his post as president of Columbia University Eisenhower suddenly and unexpectedly spoke out, throwing the military budget proceedings into a tizzy. He stated it was his "conviction" that the United States had

"already disarmed to the extent—in some instances even beyond the extent—that I . . . could possibly advise."

Invited to appear before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee, Eisenhower proposed that at least a half billion dollars be added to the Pentagon budget. When challenged by reporters, Truman baldly asserted that there were no "fundamental differences" between his views and Eisenhower's.

Louis Johnson

On 23 April 1949, Johnson had announced cancellation of the 65,000-ton flush-deck aircraft carrier USS United States. The cancellation of the super-carrier precipitated a bitter controversy between the Navy and the Air Force, the so-called "Revolt of the Admirals." Now, Ike was too much so Johnson almost immediately asked the Congress for an increase in funding to the tune of $350 million and Truman piped-up and said there were no "fundamental differences" between Eisenhower and himself. But they were still short by a million and a half dollars.

The house increased Johnson's increase by $33 million.

Henry Cabot Lodge Jr

Then it went to the Senate and Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., argued that it should be increased yet again, and they appropriated $15.6 billion dollars, an increase of $2.5 billion well beyond what was originally asked by the administration.
