Major D. M. McMains 3rdBn 9thIR
McMains finished the war as the commander of 2d Squadron. Though some of the 112th’s senior leaders remained on active duty for several years after the war, only McMains commanded combat troops in a subsequent conflict.
He saw action in Korea at the head of 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, a black unit that fought on the Pusan Perimeter and up and down the peninsula. The men and their commander earn high praise in Clay Blair, The Forgotten War: America in Korea, 1950-1953 (New York: Times Books, 1987; reprint, New York: Anchor Books, 1989), 203, 240, 260-62, 283, 478-81, 612-13.
